Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – Review

For the people who just want to watch this movie for Fawad Khan or Aishwarya Rai, I must inform you that they are merely guest stars in this movie which prominently starrs Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor.

This movie is directed by Karan Johar, a man who has given us films that are considered to be classics by a lot of people. With films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai under his belt, he had established himself as a good director (or at least an iconic one) a long time ago since these films are an integral part of Bollywood’s history. But his more recent films have been mediocre at best. For the past few years I felt that Karan Johar isn’t good at much more than making melodramatic nonsensical films that really are all drama and no heart. Never before have I been happier to be proven wrong.

Ae dil hai mushkil is a great film. I do mean that with all my heart. I feel like as soon as this movie finds the right audience, it will be another one of Karan Johar’s films that will be remembered for decades after its release.

This film delves into how Ranbir Kapoor’s character struggles to deal with a relationship which will never get him the love he wants. Anushka Sharma plays a character who has been damaged by love in the past and never wants to experience the pain that love caused her.

The performances in this film by both leads are enough reason by themselves to watch the film. Ranbir Kapoor dilevers a charming and heartfelt performance and Anushka Sharma gives a fresh and genuine performance.

That being said, this movie isn’t for everyone. Some or maybe even most people might find it difficult to relate to the lead characters and that may make the movie hard to watch for those who don’t buy into the character’s plight.

The only negative element of the movie is an event that takes place near the end of the film that felt unnecessarily exploitative but didn’t completely bring down the film for me.

It might be the best work I’ve seen from both Anushka and Ranbir in a long time. It might be hard for them to top this in the future.

This is a great movie which isn’t meant for everyone. But you should at least give this film a chance.
